Designs that Inspire

David MacKenzie brought me his beautifully written memoir and asked for a book that’s inviting to hold and read. He described a hybrid design that is clean, warm, and perhaps a bit eclectic. Together, we envisioned a book that weaves together David’s hand-drawn illustrations with his life story.

When Phyllis Massenburg and I met to talk about her book project, she was excited and delighted to share her mother’s story with her North Carolina community. As the first African American woman principal in the Durham City School System, Betty Massenburg’s name appears on the front of a new elementary school.
